The Makangara forest is under constant pressure of deforestation given the lack of proper forest governance and lack of awareness among the communities on the impacts of deforestation to the environmental and climate change.

The hard woods are a primary target for uncontrolled charcoal burning and logging for high grade timber in Mifugoni Village. The deforestation in Makangara has been taking place for quiet sometimes and if no attention is employed the precious hard woods (Mchaaka, Msagati and Mkole) and other biodiversity will face extinction very rapidly given the frequency of deforestation and less attention given by the government to this biodiversity hotspot. Poor governance especially of the local government is held as a scapegoat towards the deforestation and forest degradation of the Makangara forest eventhough the cooperation with non state actors is imperative.
